The Impact of Poor Posture on Health

Poor posture can influence musculoskeletal comfort and overall function. Research indicates that up to 90% of people experience issues related to poor posture (1). Common postural imbalances include:

  • Slouching

  • Forward pelvis

  • Rotated hips

  • Forward head position

  • Rounded shoulders (sometimes referred to as a dowager’s hump)

Each of these postures can place extra stress on the spine, which may be associated with discomfort such as tension, soreness, headaches, or back strain. Postural imbalances may also affect nervous system function, which can influence day-to-day activities, mood, concentration, and overall performance (2).

Scoliosis and Posture

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by a sideways (lateral) curvature of the spine. Curvatures greater than 10 degrees are typically classified as scoliosis, while smaller curves are generally considered within normal postural variation. Scoliosis may occur alongside other spinal curvatures, such as lordosis (curving forward) or kyphosis (curving backward), and vertebral rotation may also be present.

For people experiencing back discomfort associated with scoliosis, chiropractic care, along with exercise guidance, may help support spinal function and comfort. Most people with scoliosis can lead active, normal lives, and physical activity is generally encouraged and well-tolerated.

How Chiropractic Care can Help

Chiropractic care focuses on supporting musculoskeletal function and posture through gentle spinal adjustments and guidance on postural exercises. These approaches may help support comfort, movement, and overall musculoskeletal health for some people, while recognising that individual responses to care vary.
